Indonesian Backwoods Textile - Sumatera, Timor
August 1, 2019 - November 9
Indonesia is composed of several thousand islands and has been regarded as a treasure house of textiles. With a focus on indigenous handcrafted works, this exhibition introduces textiles from the islands of Sumatra, Timor and Nusa Tenggara. These tixtiles exhibit unexpected combinations of colors and shapes with a warmth distinctive to handcrafted works and illustrate both a way of life that does not prioritize production efficiency and flexible ideas unencumbered by tradition. The textiles abound with primitive energy and their freshness inspires those of us who live in modern times.
